Sheffield Wednesday hit by FA fine over Hillsborough trouble

Sheffield Wednesday have been fined £5,000 by the Football Association after the ugly scenes which marred last week’s home defeat to Bristol City.

Losing 3-2, Wednesday thought they should have had a penalty when City defender Richard Foster handled Rodri’s goal-bound shot, then Gary Madine’s follow-up ‘goal’ was ruled out by referee Andre Marriner.

The official accused Owls defender Miguel Llera of manhandling him in the protests which followed the penalty claims, as Wednesday players surrounded Marriner.

Llera was booked and a free-kick awarded to City, in what Owls manager Dave Jones called afterwards a moment of “stupidity”.

Now the Owls has accepted an FA charge of failing to control their players and issued with a £5,000 slap on the wrists.

A FA spokesman said: “The club have been charged for a breach of FA rule E20(a) which is failure to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

“The club admitted the charge.”

Owls boss Jones said: “I did think there was mitigating circumstances. Miguel is adamant he didn’t push the referee, the report says he didn’t push him.

“But we can’t do anything about it now, it’s gone, and we have to move forward.”
