While McGugan was delighted that Wednesday made a winning start to the campaign, he knows they cannot afford to get too carried away with one decent performance.

He was also full of praise for new boss Carlos Carvalhal who, he says, has made a real impact on his arrival at Sheffield.

Second-half strikes from Tom Lees and McGugan guaranteed Portuguese boss Carvalhal kicked off his reign with maximum points in front of a delighted Hillsborough crowd.

“It’s always important to get off to a good start, but it is only one game and we can’t get carried away. We gave a good account of ourselves, but there is a lot more work to be done,” he said. “We have got to enjoy the win but we know there’s a long season ahead. There’s another game around the corner, and we have to concentrate on that.”

McGugan is loving life under Carvalhal.

“Obviously it’s new but he [Carvalhal] has been terrific with the lads. He’s getting us all going in the same direction, putting his ideas across, and us as players have got to give 100 per cent,” he said. “Every manager is different, different ideas and different ways of working. We just have to listen to what he wants us to do.

“I love it here; I have loved every minute. The fans were terrific on Saturday, from the first minute. They got behind us and gave us a massive lift, we gave them goals and three points to go home with.”
