“We fell asleep and we didn’t start for ten minutes, but after that we’ve took the game to them.

“It’s frustrating because they’re so close to it and I feel for them. They are really working hard to try and get it right.

“We’ve come here to a team that’s just come out of the Premier League and, unless I’m watching a completely different game I thought we absolutely pulverised them for 80-odd minutes.”

Huddersfield Town skipper Peter Clarke admitted it was a case of “After the Lord Mayor’s show” for the Terriers, who came crashing back down to earth after Saturday’s highs against Wolves with a 3-1 reverse at lowly Peterborough.

And the defender is challenging Town to hit back at Millwall on Saturday, with he, Alex Smithies and Lee Novak expected to be the only survivors from the side beaten 2-0 on their last trip to the New Den in the League One play-off semi-finals in May 2010.

Clarke said: “Tuesday was very disappointing, especially after the way we played against Wolves last Saturday.

“It was a little bit after the Lord Mayor’s show, we never got our normal type of game going and we were off it all over the pitch.

“We were well below par and we know we need to do much better at Millwall.”

Meanwhile, Barnsley chief Keith Hill is keen to bolster his forward line ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Nottingham Forest.

Top-scorer Craig Davies is set to be out of action until mid-November with a hamstring injury, while summer recruit Mido is still “nowhere near match fit” according to Hill.

“I’ve got to look at the possibility of recruiting,” he said.

Another boss hoping to enter the transfer market is Rotherham’s Steve Evans and he is set to step up his pursuit at the back end of this week.

Evans is understood to be in talks regarding a Championship striker, with a loan deal being mooted with the deal being possibly made permanent in January.

Evans said: “The chairman (Tony Stewart) has had his cheque book out before, now he’s got his pen out as well.

“People asked why I brought in another midfielder (Lee Frecklington) and now they know why. When the striker comes in, his performances will show why I’ve done it, but I won’t cry if there’s no one here on Saturday.”
