Southampton v Sheffield Wednesday: Heffernan is out to show his worth

Paul HEFFERNAN is eager to grab the chance of a rare start at Southampton today and prove to Gary Megson he can be a part of the manager’s plans.

Heffernan has made only one league start all season but his third goal of the campaign on Tuesday night, from his 14th appearance from the bench, was the only positive Megson drew from the crushing 4-1 defeat to Peterborough.

Megson stated he would start the Irishman at St Mary’s tonight and Heffernan is determined to repay that faith.

“It’s a boost to know you’re going to play,” said the 29-year-old, who joined last summer from Doncaster.

“I want to get in the team and score a few more goals.

“I want to be part of it here and show the manager what I can do so I can be a part of his plans.

“This season has been very frustrating but there are still games left to play.

“When you’re not playing, all you can do is keep your head down, keep working and catch the manager’s eye in training and that’s what I’ve been doing.”
