Spence’s faith in Owls to end winless streak

Sheffield Wednesday defender Jordan Spence believes the Owls are close to ending their search for a first win of the season.

Four successive draws have been reward for two gritty away displays at Leeds united and Middlesbrough, but also wasteful home displays against Millwall and Yeovil Town.

In each game the Owls have taken a lead, and ahead of today’s trip to fellow strugglers Birmingham City, Spence - the 23-year-old right-back on loan from West Ham - believes that elusive first win is not far away.

“You can look at it a few ways, on the one hand we’ve drawn four games and are still without a win but on the other hand we have been tough to beat,” he said.

“It’s a long season but I believe we’ve got more than enough in this dressing room to turn those one point games into three.”

“That first win is something that is high on the agenda for us.”

Spence has deputised for the injured Lewis Buxton, but with the latter now back in full training, he faces a battle to retain the shirt.

His initial loan expires after next week’s derby visit of Doncaster Rovers.

“I am grateful for the opportunity and hopefully I can make is a better team,” said Spence, who has been at West Ham since he was 15, but is in the last year of his contract at Upton Park.

“I am at an age now where I need to be playing regularly. I need to show how good a footballer I am and the only way to do that is on a stage where you play every week.

“If you play well in this game, everything else looks after itself.

“I am very much enjoying it here but obviously the most important thing is the results on the pitch,” he added.

“We produced a good performance at Middlesbrough and won a hard-fought point but we are disappointed not to have done better last week against Yeovil.

“So overall, it’s going well but there is plenty to build and improve on.”

Manager Dave Jones would like to keep Spence after his one-month deal expires.

“I will speak to Sam (Allardyce) when Spence’s loan is up, speak to the chairman first and see what can be done, whether we keep him or send him back.”
