Weaver back in firing line for Wednesday as he heads back to Valley

SHEFFIELD Wednesday goalkeeper Nicky Weaver says improved professionalism has boosted the club’s chances of winning promotion this season.

Weaver, who will be up against one of his former clubs when the Owls visit Charlton Athletic tonight, has been impressed with the changes at Hillsborough since the arrival of owner Milan Mandaric and manager Gary Megson last season.

“Things are a lot more organised and professional now,” he said. “This time last year, everyone was unsure what was happening with the takeover. It was looming over the club but it has gone away now.

“We know what direction we are going now and it all bodes well for a good season.”

Weaver, 32, spent two seasons with the Addicks and played alongside Chris Powell, who was appointed manager last season.

“Chris was the fans’ choice and he is doing a great job,” Weaver said. “He’s put his own stamp on things and they have set off like a house on fire. It will be a tough game but we won’t be going there fearing anyone.”

Apart from Powell, Weaver says there will be few familiar faces waiting to greet him at The Valley.

“The majority of the players have left now,” he said. “This is my third season away and they made their 18th signing of the summer this week so clearly there have been wholesale changes.”

Weaver will return to the Owls’ side after being substituted less than two minutes into the club’s midweek Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat at Bradford City.

Owls manager Megson sent on substitute Richard O’Donnell to circumvent rules relating to team selection and the Football League are now reviewing the incident.

The Owls will be without midfielder Liam Palmer and defender Reda Johnson as both are away on international duty with Scotland Under-21s and Benin respectively.

Former Owls defender Mark Morrison could make his first appearance against the club since moving to Charlton at the start of the season.
