Neil Thompson on the key change in Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY caretaker manager Neil Thompson has pinpointed a significant development in the game of the rejuvenated Jordan Rhodes in recent times - added aggression.

Rhodes, who has endured a fraught time at Hillsborough, has scored two goals in the past week for the Owls, netting a priceless winner in the dramatic last-gasp victory at Bournemouth and backing up with a goal in this week’s 2-0 success over Wycombe.

His first-half strike against the Chairboys was his first goal on home soil since October, 2017.

Alongside his goal input, Thompson has cited something just as important from the 30-year-old.

Thompson, speaking ahead of Saturday’s home game with Swansea, where Wednesday are seeking their sixth successive league triumph at Hillsborough, said: "It has been a tough time for Jordan.

"We had a conversation a few weeks ago and he has had a bit of time off the grass and I just wanted him to get his legs 'back together' and back involved.

"He came on at Bournemouth and did terrifically well and showed a really good appetite for it and in terms of how we did it tactically the other night in putting balls into the boxes, I thought he might get on the end of one by the laws of averages.

"He always applies himself and I think you can see in his play that he has added a bit of aggression, which we needed to do. We spoke about that. He has applied himself brilliantly and long may that continue."

Thompson confirmed that Massimo Luongo will not be back in the first-team fray until later this month due to a muscle injury, while Moses Odubajo (hamstring) is likely to be missing until next month.

Joost van Aken (ankle) is also sidelined for a spell, while Andre Green (Achilles) is a doubt for the weekend.

Offering an injury update, firstly on Green, he said: “I don’t think it is anything major, it is just that we have had to train on harder surfaces with the frost. Sometimes, Astroturf is not conducive to a lot of players and he has just got a little bit of a sore Achilles and we will assess it. I don’t think it will be anything too severe.

“Massimo is coming along nicely and might be another week or two and we are hoping it is not quite as bad as we thought. Andre is not too serious, but whether he makes the weekend is debatable.”

On Odubajo, he added: “It is quite a serious hamstring tear and it is not a straightforward one.”
