USA international defender Oguchi Onyewu has been snapped up by Sheffield Wednesday to ease their defensive problems.
The 31-year-old former Newcastle United and AC Milan centre-half had been at QPR earlier this season, but his short-term deal expired this week.
The Owls are down to their last two centre-halves with Roger Johnson’s loan expiring and four other first-team defenders out injured in Lewis Buxton, Martin Taylor, Kamil Zayatte and Anthony Gardner.
Miguel Llera stepped in and helped the Owls keep a clean sheet in the 6-0 thrashing of Leeds United, but caretaker manager Stuart Gray was keen to bring in another defender.
Onyewu has signed a deal until the end of the season and hopes to use his time in the Championship to clinch in place in the World Cup finals this summer.
He began his career with French outfit Metz and went on to collect 68 international caps, scoring six goals.
