A club in major transition, Sheffield Wednesday are desperate for the season to end without any undue relegation alarms, so they can effectively start again.

It is something Monk craves. But, in the here and now, results are continuing to stalk him in a grim 2020 and he must strike the right balance to buy himself more time among fans to enable his long-term vision to get off the ground by getting some wins.

The Owls manager, whose side have lost their last three league fixtures, said: “I understand the negativity and concerns what everyone talks about.

“But I have got experience now to have seen quite a few situations and know that if we get this bit right and finish with some good results and give a bit more positivity to everyone and get this transition going, it will definitely be a positive outcome.

“The world we live in, everyone is guilty of it and thinks about the here and now and bases everything on it. I try not to fall into that trap too much.

“Of course, I get frustrated like everyone about the situation. But I try and concentrate on the bigger picture and that is where the motivation comes from.

“In difficult moments, you ask: ‘how do you keep yourself positive’. That is how I do it.”

Despite being only 41, Monk has experienced plenty in football management thus far and admits that his current position is certainly his toughest one yet.

He continued: “I believe so. With what is going on with the squad right now, it leaves us in a situation where the squad strength is weaker, but that is also down to some decisions from players as well in terms of getting through to the end of the season.

“We have had good constructive conversations on what the club needs to do going forward.

“My whole determination is to be here. I understand the negative side of it and the feeling of it will always be dictated by results.

“But I just know within myself that if we can get through these four games with some positivity, we will be able to move into something better.”
