Sheffield Wednesday duo's German lesson set to continue

Sheffield Wednesday's Matt Penney will complete his German education this season despite only having played for 68 minutes since fixtures restarted last month.

Penney is on loan at Bundesliga 2 side St Pauli, but has not been in Jos Luhukay's last two matchday squads. The 22-year-old former Bradford City player is one of two Owls on loan in Germany, along with Joost van Aken, who is at divisional rivals Osnabruck.

The 26-year-old centre-back played in his side's first two matches back, but scored an own goal in the 4-2 defeat at home to Hannover, and has not featured since.

But manager Garry Monk thinks the experience is useful for both, and neither could play for parent club Wednesday even if they were recalled.

“They’re unavailable for this season anyway, because of their season-long loans,” he said. “If we brought them back, they wouldn’t be available for us to use.

“The benefit for those two is to be playing games, and that was the reason for their loans at the start of the season.

“We can recall them, but they can’t play any part in the rest of the season anyway.”

Midfielder Connor Kirby has spent the season on loan at Macclesfield Town. League Two clubs have decided to end their regular season and are just waiting for that to be rubber-stamped, and the Silkmen will not feature in the play-offs.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at the end of the month, has made 39 appearances this season, scoring once.
