The forward enjoyed a successful loan spell, from Wigan Athletic, during the second half of last season at Hillsborough working under Garry Monk.

And despite interest from other clubs, the former Rangers man was determined to return to S6 after falling out of favour at Wigan.

“I came last season, after a difficult spell off the pitch at Wigan, and the manager (Monk) gave me a new lease of life,” said Windass. “I really enjoyed playing in front of the fans.

“I felt Wednesday was the right place for me to carry on developing, and play my football.

“There was obviously interest from other places, but my mind was set as soon as the season was finished and I spoke to the manager here.

“I wanted to come back and play for him, to try and help the club as much as I can.”

Windass has also been reunited with James Beattie - Monk’s No 2 who arrived in the summer - the pair having worked together at Accrington Stanley.

“Beats gave me my first ever chance in professional football and I’ll forever be indebted to him for that,” recalled Windass, who was released as a youngster by Huddersfield Town, before a spell at Harrogate Railway.

“As all footballers know, without that first manager giving you a chance you never know where you could have ended up. I’ll always appreciate that.

“Now we’re back working together again it’s down to me to prove why he did give me that chance, hopefully I can impress him and impress the manager and get selected.”
