The Owls tabled an offer for Windass, 26, who caught the eye of manager Garry Monk during his time on loan at Hillsborough at the end of last season, only for the administrators who are in control of the Latics to turn it down.

Wednesday recently brought in Wigan defender Chey Dunkley to the club from the Lancashire outfit.

Meanwhile, Wednesday have reportedly made a move to bring former Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United loanee Izzy Brown back to Yorkshire for a fourth spell from Premier League outfit Chelsea.

Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Queens Park Rangers have also been linked with a move to sign Brown, 23, on a season-long loan deal.
