Butcher said: “I nearly got to Barnsley, but just didn’t think it was right for me at the time. I wanted to finish off the job at Inverness.

“But Barnsley were terrific.

“With Leeds, I shook hands on the deal with Howard (Wilkinson) and went to his house. I even got a cup of tea out of him, which was rare!

“I was driving back and got a phone call from John Poynton, chairman of Coventry and said: ‘I want you to be player-manager.’ It was something I was looking forward to doing, nearing the end of my career.

“But it was a tough call with the success Leeds had under Howard. Perhaps it was the wrong call!”
