In Portugal, actually, where the national media have been charting the rapid rise of Portuguese coach Carlos Carvalhal.

With no Jose Mourinho to hog the limelight, Carvalhal’s remarkable exploits at Hillsborough - taking the Owls to the play-offs and the chance of Premier League football after 16 seasons outside the top-flight - has captured the imagination.

Portoguese journalists have been down at the Owls’ training ground at Middlewood Road and recent matches at Hillsborough.

And the Owls’ 3-0 win over Cardiff City - which clinched a play-off spot - featured prominently in Portugal’s sports pages this week.

Carvalhal, who only joined the Owls last summer, said he was proud of the way Wednesday were making headlines in his home country.

“We have had a big impact in Portugal,” he said. “Last week when we reached the play-offs, Portugal has three daily sports newspapers, and one of them had two pages on Sheffield Wednesday, a big page in the other two.

“It’s important to them, Wednesday have been on TV too, it’s good for the club.

“I am very proud when I hear the name Sheffield Wednesday in my country.”

The Owls finish off the regular season with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday lunchtime.
