Something for the weekend? Four Yorkshire matches to keep an eye on

All posted Championship victories in midweek and opportunity knocks again on home soil to claim another sweet three-point haul - although Leeds United in particular plan to have something to say about that.

The Whites’ trip to Hillsborough for a televised showdown is the marquee weekend fixture.

Here are four observations ahead of the weekend ...

1: Feel-good vibe is self-evident at Hillsborough. But can they back it up with a derby win to crown a stellar week?

It’s been a real good news week for the Owls, with Barry Bannan, Atdhe Nuhiu and Glenn Loovens penning contract extensions and Jack Hunt sealing a permanent move.

Several of the developments have been widely expected, with the timings likely to have been announced with a view to keeping the positivity levels sky-high ahead of the Leeds game.

The Owls - unbeaten at home since August 29 and looking capable of scoring goals for fun at Hillsborough at the minute - will be favourites this weekend, of that there’s no doubt.

Leeds have largely remained in the shadows, with the major developments centring on the likely exit of Sam Byram.

Sometimes that can prove not to be a bad thing in derby week - let the other side make all the pre-match headway. We will see.

2: Hull City will be the most short-priced home side backed tomorrow.

Hull’s game with Charlton has home win written all over it in indelible ink and large letters. For many, it is just a case of by which margin.

The Tigers have hit three goals without reply at home versus Ipswich and Boro in the autumn, but by and large have struggled to finish opportunities at home and passed up several opportunities against Cardiff.

Having moved back up to second in the week, an emphatic drubbing of Charlton - hapless at Huddersfield in midweek - would boost their goal difference and send out a clear message.

3: Can ‘they-shall-not-pass’ Middlesbrough make history?

A sum total of 817 minutes - or 13 hours, 37 minutes - without conceding a league goal is a truly remarkable statistic by Boro’s men of iron.

After nine successive clean sheets in the league - the run dating back 10 weeks - Boro can create second-tier history by recording another at beleaguered Bristol City.

The odds look decent, with the hosts plunged into chaos after the axing of Steve Cotterill.

But that said, the West Countrymen did spring a surprise by winning at the Riverside earlier this season - they remain the only team to win there in the league this term.

Take nothing for granted in the Championship and one thing is for sure, complacency is simply not in Aitor Karanka’s DNA.

4: Can Huddersfield Town hit their straps again.

It was perhaps a good sign for Huddersfield that David Wagner - whose star is really starting to shine - played down the five-star showing against Charlton by stating that his side were not at their best.

Sensible, as well as being indicative of the high standards he has.

Wagner expects plenty and a lowering of levels is something that you already know he frowns upon. Perform and reach your marks and he will be your friend. But if not ...

Just under 10,000 turned up on a bitterly cold night in midweek to witness the 5-0 routing of sorry Charlton at the John Smith’s Stadium.

A few more - without the restrictions of work - are likely to check out the new-look vibrant Town against Fulham and be expecting a treat.

A great time to make another statement and get some more punters on board and not disappoint them. Over to you, Town.
