The 32-year-old made a total of 15 appearances for the club in the second half of 2015-16, including a string of impressive showings which saw the club record an unbeaten 11-match run.

His signing follows on from the decision of fellow defenders Richard Wood and Kirk Broadfoot to commit their futures to the club.

On the news regarding Kelly, boss Alan Stubbs, hoping to sign Walsall winger Anthony Forde as he kick-starts his summer recruitment, said: “We are delighted that we have come to an agreement with Stephen.

“We know how important his role was towards the back end of last season.

“After speaking with him, and the likes of Kirk Broadfoot, we are delighted to be in a position to announce that they have re-signed and that they are now looking forward to the upcoming season.”
