Sunday transfer gossip: Leeds United set to miss out on Bridcutt; Boro move for Hull defender; Bantams sign Frenchman

MANAGERLESS Hull City face a battle to keep emerging former Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire from the clutches of fellow Premier League newcomers Middlesbrough.

With Steve Bruce having quit the Tigers due to a lack of transfer activity - he is already being linked to Wolves and their new owners - Hull will be desperate to avoid an exodus of players, especially with key defender Michael Dawson ruled out for three months with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Boro are also interested in signing Lille defensive midfield player Ibrahim Amadou, 23, and are said to be eyeing Leeds United left-back Charlie Taylor, who is also interesting West Bromwich.

Caretaker chief Mike Phelan, Bruce’s No 2 and former Manchester United assistant manager, said of the Hull vacancy: “I want to be a manager. I don’t really see why I shouldn’t want to be a manager. Time will tell. That decision doesn’t sometimes come down to you.”

Aston Villa are set to pip Leeds United for Sunderland midfielder Liam Bridcutt.

Bridcutt spent seven months of last season on loan at Elland Road but United may be priced out of the market as Villa are armed with their parachute payments following relegation from the Premier League.

Leeds lost 2-1 at Peterborough on Saturday, following a 4-3 win from 3-0 down against Guiseley on Friday night, when goalkeeper Marco Silvestri played a part even though he is rumoured to be on his way out of the club following the arrival of Robert Green.

David Moyes, who has taken over from new England chief Sam Allardyce as Sunderland manager, watched his new side win 2-1 at Rotherham as Fabio Borini and trialist Charles N’Zogbia got the goals.

Barnsley suffered their first pre-season defeat as goals from Kevin Mirallas, Gerard Deulofeu and Ross Barkley helped Ronald Koeman’s Everton to a 3-0 win at Oakwell.

Barnsley head coach Paul Heckingbottom Heckingbottom said: “We set up with a plan to get the players to understand what we’re about and first half they did. We wanted more of the same in the second half but the second goal killed us.

“They were bringing on internationals in the second half and we had lads who were playing the full 90 minutes. It was tough for them and tough to watch when they’re getting the runaround.

“We have to understand these games serve a purpose and at the end of the day, we’ve more than matched them for efforts on goal but they’ve come away with three goals.

“It has shown us we need to be ruthless in both boxes.”

Barnsley are hoping to fight off reported interest in central defender Alfie Mawson from relegated Premier League club Newcastle United.

Bradford City have made their seventh signing of the summer after bringing in Coventry City defensive midfielder Frenchman Romain Vincelot, 30, for an ‘undisclosed fee’.

He joins on a two-year deal after making 46 appearances last season for Coventry, scoring four times.

Che Adam, subject of a £1.2m bid from Birmingham City, came off the bench as Sheffield United won 3-1 at Grimsby, Billy Sharp scoring twice and Dominic Calvert-Lewin getting the other.

Barnsley’s Kayden Jackson featured for Paul Hurst’s Grimsby after completing a loan move from Oakwell.
