Goalkeeper Ross Turnbull proved hero and villain as the Reds suffered a sixth consecutive away defeat.

Raphael Rossi Branco lashed home the opener in the first half and Swindon should have made it 2-0 but Andy Williams saw his penalty saved by Turnbull diving to his right after Chelsea loanee John Swift had been felled by Paul Digby.

But Turnbull gifted Swindon their second, failing to smother Ben Gladwin’s shot in the 85th minute.

Reds chief Danny Wilson said: “If you give a goal away as we did in the first instance you’re going to have your backs against the wall.

“It was a very sloppy goal, we just fell asleep. We didn’t pick the man that went out for the short corner. We’ve made a couple of mistakes and they’ve scored. But as the game went along we started to make it difficult for them.”

Wilson made two changes to his side which beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Conor Hourihane was rested for the first time this season by Wilson. The Irishman dropped to the bench – he replaced the injured Martin Cranie at the start of the second half – and was joined on it by Kane Hemmings, who had scored the winner against Oldham.

Digby had been given the chance in midfield but was replaced at the break by Dale Jennings.
