The former Robins forward makes his first return to the County Ground tonight with Rovers, but is not concerning himself with sentiment.

Williams has endured peaks and troughs at the Keepmoat Stadium too, having struck 14 times, but failing to score in his last six outings.

His current barren streak has coincided with Rovers’ collective downturn, which has seen them go eight matches without a win in all competitions.

It has sparked fears of a relegation struggle, but after an encouraging weekend draw with Millwall, Williams spies some green shoots of recovery.

He said: “Saturday was a better performance. After the start we had, you are up against it a little bit and any little dip in form, you often end up looking over your shoulder again. But we are confident we are a good enough group and team to get the points that we need.”

On returning to Swindon, now managed by Luke Williams, he added: “The three years I had there were a rollercoaster from (Paolo) Di Canio to Mark Cooper.

“But they have picked up of late after having had a rocky season as well with a change of manager.

“Luke has been there for the whole time and is probably the only piece of stability they have had in the place.”
