Team of the Week - Who makes Yorkshire's starting XI?

EVENTFUL is probably the best word to describe this weekend's tumultuous action, which had thrills, spills, late drama and a bit more besides - a trophy in the cabinet for Barnsley after a Wembley day to remember.

As ever, there were a fair few candidates in a number of positions for our Yorkshire Post Team of the Week and the choices were tough.

Anyway, here is our best Yorkshire XI .... for this week anyway.

Feel free to differ.

1: Lee Camp (Rotherham United)

A leading lieutenant in the Millers’ staggering Great Escape under Lance Corporal Warnock. Another telling showing against Leeds and again underlined just what an important signing he has been for the club this season.

2: Stephen Darby (Bradford City)

The Bantams’ Mr Dependable was at it again on Saturday, typically going about his diligent defensive duties with aplomb and producing another saving moment from his repertoire to deny Scunthorpe’s Paddy Madden a certain first-half goal. Pro’s pro and wonderfully consistent.

3: Joe Mattock (Rotherham United)

Excellent display in the derby cauldron against Leeds with several of his team-mates not far behind. Did his decent duties consummately and worked effortlessly down the left.

4: Joel Lynch (Huddersfield Town)

Desperately unlucky to finish on the losing side after a commanding derby display against the Owls and the pick of the bunch for Town.

On cue to fire his first goal since August, with Hull producing a sound defensive showing, with Davies at the heart of it, with Michael Dawson not far behind. A couple of experienced hands at the tiller at this time of year.

6: Chris Basham (Sheffield United)

Scored one goal and went close on another couple of occasions and was involved heavily at the Lane with the Blades having too much power and nous for Walsall.

7: Adam Hammill (Barnsley)

Adam Hammill is a red have never been sung with more gusto than by the 24,000 Barnsley fans at Wembley. It is a stage for match-winners to step forward as Hammill did with a wonderful goal which will go down in Reds folklore and he also provided an assist for the equaliser with Barnsley in bother at 1-0 down. The sort of afternoon that dreams are made of.

8: Lee Frecklington (Rotherham United)

The sweet moments keep stacking up for the midfielder, who has returned to his relentless, persistent best under Warnock, with his semblance of threat in the box pronounced. Scored against the club who he used to follow as a boy and who he still retains a soft spot for.

9: Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday)

No stranger to this weekly line-up, the man Owls fans nickname ‘Fessi’ scored a predatory late winner at Huddersfield before being serenaded in song. Scored a poacher’s strike and stood up despite getting a bit of a buffeting at times. Capable of scoring all manner of goals.

10: Sone Aluko (Hull City)

Showing signs of rediscovering his mojo after an at times tortuous campaign - and has timed his run well. Justified Steve Bruce’s decision to plump for him ahead of Abel Hernandez and scored one goal and created another. A refreshing rewind.

11: Robert Snodgrass (Hull City)

After being a caged Tiger for the first half of the season, the winger is making up for lost time and was in the groove at the weekend, netting a well-taken, if rare header, with his quality and endeavour on the flank showing just why Hull forked out a hefty fee to sign him in the summer of 2014.

Manager: Paul Heckingbottom (Barnsley)

This manager lark is not half bad, is it. Afforded an occasion and day he will always remember after leading his hometown club to their first cup success since 1912. Credit for telling a few home truths and engineering a response from his charges at half-time, his words clearly worked on a vastly improved second-half show which brought the cup back to Barnsley.
