Team of the Weekend: Town dominate selections after derby win at Leeds

As for The Yorkshire Post team of the weekend, there were a fair few contenders, with grit and resilience accompanying quality and verve.

1: George Long (Sheffield United). Kept the score down at the New Den and added to his burgeoning reputation in a season when not too many Blades players have not done themselves many favours.

2: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair (Doncaster Rovers). A decent, diligent second-half showing from the defender who has had his trials and tribulations, like his team-mates, in recent weeks. Bitter denouement at the death for him and team-mates, mind as Rovers undeservedly went down.

3: James Husband (Huddersfield Town). A rampaging force in the second half as he and his Town team-mates made considerable hay at Elland Road and wreaked havoc.

4: Mark Hudson (Huddersfield Town). Levelled with a powerful header for Town and was a big commanding force at both ends of the pitch. Will have enjoyed his derby day immensely.

5: Lloyd Doyley (Rotherham United). Pressed into the service after a spell out with injury and rolled back the years with a defensive performance full of nous to snuff out the threat of Ipswich’s Freddie Sears.

6: Josh Brownhill (Barnsley). Had made a considerable impact in his time at Oakwell, and on his return to the North-West, produced a strong showing to help the Reds return to the play-off zone. A very tidy loan signing.

7: Tony McMahon (Bradford City). Typically unflustered, workaholic performance for the wonderfully-consistent utility man, with the display all the more commendable given he had a few bumps and bruises after the previous weekend’s exploits against Doncaster. One of the first names on the teamsheet for Phil Parkinson and the pro’s player.

8: Greg Halford (Rotherham United). It is hard to find a more staggering turnaround this season for a Yorkshire-based footballer. After being persona non grata, Halford has been a leading light in the Millers’ magnificent ‘Great Escape’, which has yielded a brilliant 13 points from 15. Strong again at Portman Road. Basking in his renaissance.

9: Nahki Wells (Huddersfield Town). Showed his character after his first-half penalty miss to give United all manner of problems in an outstanding second period. Ran Leeds ragged at times in the second half and how he is flowering under Herr Wagner.

10: Fernando Forestieri (Sheffield Wednesday). Came to the party for the umpteenth time this season in another dazzling performance and very much Wednesday’s main offensive weapon. Three million pounds exceedingly well spent.

11: Joe Lolley (Huddersfield Town). Another who dined out at Leeds’ expense and showed cunning, trickery and quality to bewitch the second-best hosts on the restart.

Manager: David Wagner (Huddersfield Town). Masterminded the sweetest result of his tenure as Town claimed payback for their derby loss in the autumn with their biggest win at Elland Road since 1960.
