Terrier Rhodes is en route to London Games

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN striker Jordan Rhodes faces a potentially gruelling build-up to next season after being named in Great Britain’s provisional squad for the Olympics.

The 22-year-old has been included in the 35-man squad that will be cut to 18 by manager Stuart Pearce early next month with another four due to be placed on standby.

After a stunning season that saw the Terriers striker hit 48 goals for club and country, Rhodes must have a strong case for inclusion as Team GB look to make home advantage pay in the the tournament which gets under way on July 26.

If Rhodes does get the nod, however, it will open up the possibility of a draining few weeks ahead of the new domestic season kicking off on August 18.

Not only do Britain play Senegal, UAE and Uruguay between July 26 and August 1 but should Pearce’s side progress to the knockout stages they will face the possibility of three more games, with the August 4 quarter-finals due to be followed by the semi-finals three days later and the final on the Saturday.

It is a demanding schedule by any standards, though one that Rhodes is desperate to be part of as Britain hosts the Games for the first time since 1948.

Also delighted for the striker are Huddersfield club officials with chief executive Nigel Clibbens quick to praise one of the hottest properties outside the Premier League.

He said: “We knew about Jordan’s position on the 80-man long list a long time ago but had to remain silent about it. His nomination to Team GB’s 35-man squad for the Olympic Games is a superb personal achievement for him and a proud moment for Huddersfield Town and our fans.

“Jordan is an amazing ambassador for Huddersfield Town and the football profession, with his great performances on the pitch being complemented by his contribution to the community and town off it.

“Everyone at the club sincerely hopes he gets selected for the final 18-man squad.”

Rhodes, the subject of a £5m bid from West Ham United last January, will discover on July 6 if he has made the final squad.

The tournament is designed for Under-23s but Pearce can name three overage players.

David Beckham is expected to be handed one of those berths along with Ryan Giggs, while Craig Bellamy and Frank Lampard have also been suggested as possible squad members.
