Torquay United 1 Bradford City 2: Evans double for Bantams

BRADFORD City chief Stuart McCall was full of praise after half-time substitute Gareth Evans's late double gave the Bantams the points.

There was little to choose between the strugglers in the early stages but it was Torquay who took the lead after 15 minutes. Matt Glennon saved brilliantly from Elliot Benyon but his defenders struggled to defend the subsequent corner and Chris Robertson drove the ball in low and hard.

After the break, Torquay continued to create the better chances but Michael Flynn denied Scott Rendell and Simon Ramsden blocked out Danny Stevens.

McCall's half-time substitutions and switch to 4-4-2 began to pay dividends, and Evans hooked the ball into the net from close range, following a corner.

Then, two minutes into stoppage time, Evans was the man on hand to knock the ball in again as the defence struggled to deal with another deep cross.

McCall said: "There have been too many times when we have been the better team in a game and not come away with what we've deserved. It was nice to see that change today. It was what the lads deserved.

"I said last week that we needed to win three out of the next four games. This result is fantastic, but we've got to build on it now. We will build on it this week.

"Gareth always gives everything for the cause. He has been affected by the lack of confidence, but he always keeps going at it."
