Town add tenacious Gudjonsson to midfield

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN have pulled off a significant coup by signing Iceland international midfielder Joey Gudjonsson from Burnley on a free transfer.

Terriers manager Lee Clark believes the capture of the vastly-experienced 30-year-old proves the club are heading in the right direction as they attempt to plot their way out of League One.

The former Aston Villa and Wolves player featured in the Premier League last season after helping Burnley to promotion and commanded a transfer fee of 3.5m when joining Spanish club Real Betis from Dutch club RKC Waalwijk in 2001.

Clark said: "Joey is very energetic and plays with a real intensity. He's a box-to-box player who is very competitive.

"He can play at the level we want to reach and has great experience of both Premiership and Championship football in this country.

"That experience is vital, but he also still has the desire to be successful."

Gudjonsson, who has won 34 caps and signed a two-year deal at the Galpharm, is a player who Clark feels will give his side additional tenacity in the middle of the park.

"At the end of the season I earmarked that we needed more experience and he fits into that category," he said. "I know we have beaten Championship clubs to his signature, which shows that word is getting around about how ambitious we are and that we are doing things in the right way.

"It's a bit of a coup that we haven't had to pay a transfer fee for a lad of his quality, too."
