Town players told to follow Vaughan’s example

Huddersfield have found the net four times in their opening quartet of matches, with Vaughan the man on target on each occasion.

While neither Robins nor Vaughan wants to stem the striker’s bright start to the campaign, the manager does expect the rest of his players to contribute – starting today against Bournemouth.

“James is in a rich vein of form. We hope he can continue in that vein and see if we can get different scorers as well,” said Robins.

“We cannot rely on James in every single game – although he’d probably have a different idea of that.

“It’s important we create chances and get people into the box because we’ve got other players that can score goals and we need to improve that part of our game.

“We’ve got players in the side that can score goals. As yet, we’ve not managed to get a different name on the scoresheet, so that’s the challenge.”

The general mood at Huddersfield’s Canalside training facility yesterday was one of quiet satisfaction at how they have opened the season.

Defender Anthony Gerrard described it as a “steady start”, with the win at Millwall the only result people should judge Town on, given that they began with two stern tests against promotion-favourites Nottingham Forest and QPR.

For Robins, the start has been encouraging, especially considering he has asked his players to switch formations from the standard 4-4-2 to one that focuses on ball retention in a 3-5-2.

“I’m happy with the way things are at present,” said Robins.

“It’s not about systems, it’s about players. They dictate.

“You’re looking for your players to perform and find some consistency and they’re doing that at the moment.

“What we want to do is build on the performances. The players are enjoying it, they understand their roles and their responsibilities.

“It’s really early days, nobody’s getting carried away, but we’re enjoying it and that’s got to bode well.

“I’m looking for the players to continue in that vein but also to step up a gear as well.”

While wary of the threat a neat and tidy Bournemouth possess, Robins is concerned only with how his own team approach the game.

“They pass the ball, they try and play the right way, they can play on the counter-attack,” said the former Rotherham and Barnsley chief. “But we’re at home and we want to entertain our supporters. Can we attain the same performance levels as we did last week?”
