The 25-year-old, who worked with Wagner during his spell in the Borussia Dortmund youth system, is out of contract at the end of the season and appears unlikely to remain at RB Leipzig despite the promoted side flying to second place in their first Bundesliga campaign.

Boyd is still working his way back from a cruciate ligament injury but has been scoring on a prolific basis for Leipzig’s reserve team and Town have identified him as player capable of maintaining their surprise promotion challenge over the second half of the campaign.

The Red Bull-funded Germans paid £1.7m for the former US under-23 international in 2014, but could move to Yorkshire for a bargain fee.

Premier League sides Hull City and West Bromwich Albion are set to battle it for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Jason Lowe.

The 25-year-old has made over 150 appearances for Rovers, but his contractual situation will see him leave for nothing in the summer, with Brighton also interested.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes admits he faces a battle to keep Middlesbrough target Bojan Krkic at the club - with Boro confident of luring the Spaniard to the Riverside.

The ex-Barcelona prospect was left out of the Stoke squad for Saturday’s 3-1 win at Sunderland, with Hughes claiming the 26-year-old is struggling with a “hip injury”.

Boro have identified Bojan as one of their top targets during the January transfer window, but are also keeping tabs on Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu, PSG forward Jese Rodriguez and Hull’s Robert Snodgrass.

Bojan is a prime target due to his flexibility in being able to play in a variety of advanced positions.

A report in Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo over the weekend claimed Bojan is interested in a move to Boro, with Hughes conceding he faces an uphill battle to keep the player at the club beyond this month after the weekend game on Wearside.

Hughes said: “He wasn’t fit for the game. But we would like him to stay with us.

“But if Bojan and his advisers feel that is the best thing for his career we will have to wait and see and have further discussions about it.

“Ideally, he just needs to settle down and focus on his career at Stoke.”

Stoke want to sign West Brom’s Saido Berahino and bringing him in first could provide the green light for any Bojan move.

Out of favour Everton winger Gerard Deulofeu is also on Boro’s radar, with the Toffees set to allow the Spaniard to leave this month.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to AC Milan, with Boro also keen.

Deulofeu is surplus to requirements at Everton and was left out of the squad for the 4-0 hammering of Manchester City and has played just 45 minutes since December 10.
