Head coach Garry Monk is interested in a player he has known since his days at former club Swansea City, Emyr Huws.

The stumbling block, however, could be the £2m fee Wigan are wanting for the 22-year-old Welshman, who spent last season on loan at the John Smith’s Stadium.

A first-half penalty from Chris Wood and a first Elland Road goal from Kemar Roofe saw United triumph.

Doncaster Rovers’ transfer-listed winger Billy Whitehouse is said to be close to joining Leeds.

The 20-year-old midfielder has recently been on trial and is understood to have impressed United’s coaching team.

He was transfer-listed by Darren Ferguson at the end of the last season, having made nine appearances for Rovers after being handed his debut by Paul Dickov in 2014.

Promoted Hull City have been linked with season-long loan moves for two strikers.

They are said to have asked about Manchester City’s Wilfried Bony, who has scored only 11 goals in 46 appearances for them, and Liverpool’s Christian Benteke after his proposed move to Crystal Palace hit a stumbling block.

Hull’s priority, of course, is finding a new manager and Wales chief Chris Coleman is the latest to be linked with the job since Steve Bruce walked out on the Tigers, unhappy with the club’s transfer policy.

Middlesbrough have already made nine signings in readiness for life in the Premier League but coach Aitor Karanka wants to make it 10 and three central defenders are interesting him.

He already has a reported £4m bid in for Hull City’s Harry Maguire, but, along with Verona’s Swedish defender Filip Helander, Karanka has made inquiries about taking legendary Frenchman Zinedine Zidane’s son Enzo, 21, on loan from Real Madrid. Karanka played alongside Zidane for Real 15 years ago.

Alvaro Negredo, Viktor Fischer and Jordan Rhodes gave the Boro a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Premier League sides Burnley and Sunderland, plus the Owls’ Championship rivals Derby and Fulham have all made enquiries for the 25-year old centre-back, who has been a mainstay of the team since joining from Leeds on a free transfer two years ago.

Daniel Pudil and Almen Abdi have joined from Watford in the summer transfer window and the Owls are determined to build rather than sell as they mount another bid for promotion.

Huddersfield Town kept clean sheets against two Bundesliga opposition during their pre-season training camp in Austria and centre-back substitute Michael Hefele scored the only goal as they beat FC Ingolstadt 1-0 following a 0-0 draw with Werder Bremen.
