The former Leeds United and Rotherham United player has been sidelined for the past four games, with fellow full-backs James Bree and George Smith also missing, along with Marley Watkins.

But Reds caretaker head coach Heckingbottom has revealed that White could be in contention this weekend.

Heckingbottom said: “We are still not sure if they (injured players) are going to make it. But we are more hopeful with an extra week’s recovery and re-hab with Sedgy (physiotherapist Craig Sedgwick), so we are hopeful that we get at least one involved.

“But with the amount of time they have been out, you can’t be pushing them and expecting miracles. But it would be lovely to have one of them in the squad and hopefully on the bench.

“Aidy White (has the best chance). With the nature of the others being hamstring injuries, with James Bree and George Smith, it might mean it is too risky to involve them.

“But with Aidy, if the risk is manageable, we will look to include him.”

Barnsley are narrowly ahead of Scunthorpe United on goal difference in the final League One play-off spot, with the Iron visiting Sheffield United - managed by their former manager Nigel Adkins - on Sunday lunch-time.

The other side still in the top-six mix are Gillingham, two points adrift of the Reds and the Iron.

They also face a tough final-day outing, at home to Millwall.
