NEW ROTHERHAM UNITED manager Alan Stubbs has set his sights on a Championship play-off push after taking charge of the Millers on a three-new deal.

The Merseysider, 44, was unveiled as the club’s fourth manager in just over eight months this lunch-time and he will be assisted by his former Hibernian number two John Doolan.

Stubbs, who insists he has left Hibs on good terms, said: “The club have had two seasons now where they have stabilised in the Championship and we are looking now to take the club forward. That’s the aim, full stop.

“We want to be moving up the table and ultimately, one that is around the play-offs, come the end of the season.

“It has to be the aim, it’s very simple as far as we’re concerned.

“It is a new chapter, but one that is very exciting for me.”

On his footballing style, he said: “It’s about winning, that’s the most important philosophy. You can have a style and brand of football, but the more important thing is winning football games. Because if you don’t, you are not in a job.

“I like entertaining brand of football and players to play with a freedom. But for me, it is not rocket scienee and sometimes, the style way is the best way and the fans will see a style of football they can link to.

Chairman Tony Stewart said: “Alan was head and shoulders above the other candidates and what impressed us about him was that he was a leader.”
