Johnson and the Reds are doing it tough on the back of a grim six-match losing streak, the club’s worst ever at this level of football.

Johnson - who came under-fire from some supporters at the end of Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Scunthorpe United, which left them second-from-bottom in the League One table - is keen to add to fresh bodies to his squad and will hold a recruitment meeting with owner Patrick Cryne today.

One option is Argentine schemer Colace, who played over 100 games for the Oakwell outfit between 2008 and 2010.

Johnson said: “Patrick is in today and we will have a chat and it’s a recruitment meeting. Hopefully, positives will come out that and we will get one or two in.

“But it’s difficult as in fairness, there is not an awful lot about. Sometimes, you have to be careful not just to bring bodies in. You have to bring the right ones in.

“We know we are looking for that experience. But given the fact we have so many loans already, we have to be very picky on what we take in.

“Some of the players who are about are out of contract and might need a pre-season again. So you are talking about six weeks to get fit.”

On Colace, Johnson added: “Hugo is due to come in; he’s just to sort his flight out. There’s no secret there.

“He’s 31 and I know he’s been working hard physically and sending me some videos of him working and doing some work with a professional trainer. He has a fond memory of the club and the fans have a fond memory of him. But I will assess it just like I would any other player.

“There’s a couple of others who are out of contract who we might have a look at and look at their fitness levels to see where they are. We have got to make a decision on if it will be worth bringing someone in that we need to get fit, given that January is too far away yet.”
