Video: Hemmings proves Pope loss is not damaging

BARNSLEY may have missed out on signing striking target Tom Pope in the lead-up to transfer deadline day, but they have not been without positive news on the forward front this week.

It is actually a toss-up as to which has been the most welcome development, with it probably being Kane Hemmings netting for the first time in the league since October 12 in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Oldham.

Hemmings showed predatory instincts to volley home Milan Lalkovic’s 12th-minute cross and is now hoping it is the sign of better times.

Reds chief Danny Wilson recently revealed that the ex-Rangers and Cowdenbeath was still a firm part of his plans despite being left out of three matchday squads last month.

Wilson subsequently brought him back for the home wins over Port Vale and the Latics, with Hemmings goal adding to his sense of well-being after extending the loan of George Waring and seeing top-scorer Sam Winnall successfully step up his comeback from injury.

Hemmings said: “It was a good night (on Tuesday) and important we got the three points after Saturday. I was delighted to get the goal and with the three points.

“I needed the goal and when it goes into the back of net, there is no better feeling. It is the hardest thing to do in football and the best feeling.

“Competition can only strive you on a bit. With Sam coming back, you know he is going to get you a few goals and big George is a handful who works hard for the team and he has already got a goal.”

Hemmings admitted that the step up from the lower reaches of the Scottish Championship to League One has been tough at times this term, but feels he is now acclimatising.

He added: “I feel like now I know what I need to do in games and I know where I need to be and what I need to do to effect games.

“Hopefully, with a run of games, I can get a few more goals.

“I have to thank the gaffer for sticking with me. I always feel when I get on the pitch, I can get in the box and score a goal.”
