The vastly-experienced former Middlesbrough player, who celebrates his 34th birthday later this month, has been sidelined with a knee injury since appearing in the 2-0 victory at Birmingham City in December 5.

But Whitehead, who it was thought could be out for up to eight weeks, is on the mend and Wagner is hopeful he will provide the club with a boost shortly.

Wagner, who says that Emyr Huws, recovered from illness, is likely to be involved from the bench in Tuesday’s home game with struggling Charlton Athletic, said: “Hopefully, Dean will be back at the end of the week in training.

“So maybe he is available next week in this very busy period.

“From our side of injuries, we are in a very good position at the moment.

“This is very good for us to keep that idea of rotation running.”
