The 21-year-old, fresh from an outstanding campaign with Southend, rejected a new deal to embark on a his journey with Town, having been earmarked for the creative ‘No 10’ attacking midfield brief in head coach David Wagner’s fluid 4-2-3-1 system.

Payne, who has signed a three-year deal, with Southend due compensation as he is under 24, said: “I heard a lot about the way that Huddersfield play and have seen them a few times and the philosophy of passing football suits me and I wanted to be part of that.

“I have met David a few times and he seems a great character and I have heard a lot of good things about him.

“His teams are hard-working and like to play good football and that it what I am about and it is exciting to work under him.

“I like to think that I am an exciting player who gets fans off their chairs and scores a few goals. They should enjoy watching me and I will look forward to how they react to me playing.”

Despite rival interest, Payne says that after doing his homework regarding Wagner, moving north was an easy decision.

Payne added: “There was a lot of other interest. But to be honest, I didn’t take up any other clubs, but as soon as I looked into Huddersfield and their style of football and manager, everything I saw from Huddersfield was what I wanted.

“I wasn’t just moving for the sake of it. I wanted the right move. When I heard the interest, I was definitely set on Huddersfield.

“I have done a lot of research and it was all good feedback.

“Huddersfield last season -–and hopefully this season – will play the 4-2-3-1 and for me in the middle of a three, that is where I want to be playing, in the No 10 role.

“I like getting on the ball, being creative and helping out with the goals.”
