They fell short, however, when they came up against a dominant Millwall side who exposed the Bantams’ season-long struggles in front of goal, always looking the most likely to reach Wembley after winning the first leg 3-1 at Valley Parade.

But, after new German investors completed their takeover of the club towards the end of May, the club’s fans were rocked by the news that Parkinson - who had guided them to promotion from League Two and a Capital One Cup final appearance at Wembley - was on his way through the exit door.

The former Reading and Hull City manager is now in place at Bolton Wanderers, itself in a period of transformation under new owners.

It means a busier than perhaps anticipated summer ahead at Valley Parade as they look to bring in a new manager as well as build a squad as good as that from 2015-16 to challenge for the play-offs once again.
