A promising pre-season for Paul Dickov’s team offered plenty of reasons to be cheerful going into the 2015-16 campaign, but that optimism soon gave way to frustration which saw the Rovers boss head through the exit door.

After a somewhat prolonged period under caretaker boss Rob Jones, Doncaster eventually decided on a long-term replacement when they brought in Darren Ferguson.

The impact of the Scot was the reason why some Rovers fans dreamt of a top-six finish come the turn of the year.

But what they could not foresee was their team embarking on a 17-match winless streak from January to April which saw them nosedive into the relegation battle.

A slight upturn in results from mid-April offered a glimmer of hope to fans, but it was to prove too little, too late - relegation being mathematically confirmed on the final day of the season after a 0-0 draw at home to Burton Albion, a result which proved enough to secure promotion for the Brewers.
