Village footballers victorious at Wembley

A tense 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory completed a remarkable Wembley final for North Ferriby United in the FA Trophy, after they had to fight back from 2-0 down against Wrexham, before the score was tied at 3-3 after extra time.

For those who had not travelled down to the capital to cheer on their team, the football club was broadcasting the game to fans at the stadium’s bar and the victory sparked mass celebrations.

Shortly after the winning spotkick, club barmaid Karen Roberts said: “It was an amazing experience. We had lots of children here watching the game and they were shouting for Wrexham to ‘lose, lose, lose’ when they took the penalties, and for us to win.

“Most of Ferriby has gone to the match. People have been coming in saying the village is like a ghost town. I think there will be lots of sore heads tomorrow.

“It was fabulous to watch especially in the second half.”

Jeremy Stead, the secretary of The Ferriby Social Club, listened to the game on the radio. He said: “We’ve had a really good day. It’s fantastic for the village.”
