We must take care of ourselves, says Robins

COME 3pm tomorrow, Huddersfield Town could be sitting in the top half of the Championship table or in the relegation zone and heading for League One.

If anything sums up the crazy nature of this season’s second tier, it is the Terriers being able to finish anywhere between 12th and 22nd with just 90 minutes of 2012-13 remaining.

Mark Robins, whose side need a point from tomorrow’s derby with Barnsley to guarantee safety, describes such a scenario as “ridiculous”, but the Town chief is also adamant that his side are ready for the challenge.

He said: “I liken Saturday’s game to a Cup tie. It is a one-off game and one we are looking forward to come kick-off. The quicker it comes, the better.

“I always felt this (relegation fight) was likely to go down to the last day. The teams at the bottom have worked so hard since I came here. The results have been unbelievable with everyone at the bottom winning games.

“I would say it has been more like play-off form and that is why teams on 54 or 57 points can still slip out of the league. There are so many scenarios, but it is about us and how we perform on the day.”

Tomorrow’s match pits Robins’s current club against one of his former employers, the 43-year-old having spent 20 months in charge at Oakwell before leaving at the end of the 2010-11 season.

The Town manager added: “It is ironic, in a way, that the game is against Barnsley. But, equally, the fixtures have been out all season. To me it has nothing to do with the game.

“I was employed there for a while but no longer. My focus is firmly on Huddersfield Town and for us to finish as high as we can in the league. And we can finish as high as 12th. That is ridiculous.”

For Huddersfield to be relegated, Barnsley must win at the John Smith’s Stadium, Millwall claim at least a point from the trip to Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday to beat Middlesbrough as Peterborough United triumph at Crystal Palace.

Robins added: “There are a lot of permutations that can happen, but we can look after ourselves. If we take care of our business, then we don’t have to worry about anyone else.”

The Reds will make the short trip to Huddersfield in buoyant mood following the impressive manner of last Saturday’s win over Hull City.

Robins said: “We have to give Barnsley credit for the way they play. Since Dave Flitcroft took over, they have been a really good side who have picked up points.”
