We will still have to wheel and deal insists Hull City boss

HULL City manager Nigel Pearson is confident Tigers fans will enjoy a brighter 2011 after watching his side extend their unbeaten run to six matches with the 2-0 defeat of Bristol City.

But he warned that he will not have a huge kitty available to operate with in the January transfer window despite the club having new owners.

New chairman Egyptian-born businessman Assem Allam and son Ehab have completed a 40m bail-out of the club and they received a standing ovation before Saturday's kick-off.

Taking over from Russell Bartlett, the Allams have agreed to make a 30m cash investment into Hull over the next 12 months and also provide personal guarantees against additional debts of 10m.

They were rewarded with Hull's best display of the season and manager Pearson said: "It's been a great week for the club in terms of the takeover but very frustrating football-wise because of the number of injuries and players unavailable. But you have to say that the players who went out there – and I don't know if that's the first time that the starting line-up had finished the match for me – I think they have played pretty well against one of the form sides. There is no question we deserved to win."

Reflecting on how things have gone under a backdrop of financial turmoil, he continued: "It's been a difficult first half of the season because we remain one of the low scorers and it's an area we will look to strengthen. But three teams have kept 10 clean sheets and we are one of them so you have to cut your cloth accordingly. Our squad is what it is and we are in a period of transition.

"It's been a tough first half of the season. But hopefully we can build on that. The takeover is great news for the club. It's been more complicated and gone on a bit longer than people would have expected but it was important that people got it right.

"We as a club have got ourselves into a bit of a mess so it was important to have our future sorted out to an extent where our debt is able to be managed and the future is looking better on every level.

"We remain a club who will have to wheel and deal to change the squad, there is no doubt about that. The wage bill is huge, the parachute payments for the next 18 months are all accounted for so it has needed a real takeover with real clout to be able to resolve the situation.

"I won't be spending money in bucketloads, I can assure you of that, but what I will be doing is looking to improve the squad. We need to invest more wisely but I knew what the remit was when I came into the job.

"Of course when people all of a sudden think you are flush with money it's important we do business in the right way."

Pearson was delighted that summer-signing Jay Simpson finally got off the mark with the brace of goals that sunk Bristol.

"There's an awful lot of pressure on strikers when they are not scoring so I am pleased for him.

"The important thing is that (on Saturday) he played his part in a good team win. He's had a tough start but if he comes through and continues to play like that then we will see a different Jay Simpson."
