Wells's strike at Leeds also registered for City

NAHKI WELLS'S hot scoring streak has boosted not only Huddersfield Town's points tally in recent weeks, but also the coffers of former club Bradford City.

The Bermuda international took his season’s total to 15 in the Championship with the fourth and final goal in Saturday’s West Yorkshire 4-1 derby romp for the Terriers at Leeds United.

Thanks to the structure of the transfer that took Wells from Valley Parade in January, 2014, for an initial £1.25m including clauses based on appearances and goals, City are understood to have now banked more than £1.5m.

This includes a payment of £50,000 every time the striker nets 15 goals in a season for the Terriers.

Last term, he found the net 14 times – meaning Bradford just missed out on a cash boost.

Despite that, the League One club have benefited significantly over the past two years thanks to Wells having made 87 appearances to date for Huddersfield.

It is also understood City have a substantial sell-on clause should the striker move on in the future.

Wells is fourth in the goalscoring list for the Championship behind Andre Gray (who cost Burnley £9m last summer), Ross McCormack (bought by Fulham for £11m) and Abel Hernandez (Hull’s record signing at £10m).

The 25-year-old’s team-mates are certainly in no doubt as to how invaluable he has become to the Town cause.

“It is difficult for him,” said defender Mark Hudson. “He has got a lot of pressure on his shoulders but he knows he has hit the penalty well (that Marco Silvestri saved).

“He takes stick, the (Leeds) fans were getting on him. But he works so hard and gets in the right positions. To create the goal he did for Karim (Matmour) was very unselfish so I take my hat off to him. He knows from time to time he is going to miss chances but you have just got to keep going. Nahki tirelessly runs all day, one up top on his own.”

Dean Whitehead is equally pleased with Wells, who extended his scoring streak to 10 goals from 16 outings. “Nahki is capable of anything,” said the midfielder. “The penalty wasn’t his best penalty, but he responded well.”

Town have extended their cut-price season ticket deal from 10,000 to 15,000 after selling over 11,000 in the first five days of the offer.
