West Brom 3 Newcastle United 1: Di Matteo denies survival is sole aim for impressive West Brom

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo praised his side after their convincing win over Newcastle at The Hawthorns yesterday.

Peter Odemwingie struck a second-half double after Somen Tchoyi had given the Baggies the lead before the break.

"I thought we played very well. I thought everything about today was good," Di Matteo said.

"We scored three great goals and we controlled the game for the majority of the time.

"I think we pressed them quite high up the pitch, we never let them settle in. We recovered possession quite well.

"I thought the first goal was an excellent goal. The second goal came from pressing them and the third as well."

After moving into the top half of the table Di Matteo denied his side were only hoping to avoid relegation back to the Championship.

"No, absolutely not. We are trying to learn to be in the Barclays Premier League," he added.

"We need to keep it going game by game. We have a great game against Aston Villa next week, which hopefully we can go into with a lot of confidence."

Odemwingie was happy to help secure back-to-back wins and put last month's poor run of form, when West Brom went winless for five games, behind them.

"We had a series of bad games but the last two games we have got six points," he said. "We are very happy. Especially as we have won 3-1."

The Nigeria international was also content to get back on the scoresheet for the first time after returning from injury.

"There was instruction from the coaches that I stay high with the defenders, because I was all over the place in the first half," he added. "So I did that – it's good sometimes to listen."

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton held a lengthy post-match inquest with his players.

Hughton kept his players locked in the dressing room for more than an hour after the final whistle.

He said: "After most games, there tends to be an inquest into the game.

"Some of it is about getting answers, some of it is about venting your anger.

"But these are the normal things that will go on after a game, particularly when the result has been as disappointing (as against West brom).

"Our season has very much been highs and lows.

"But we weren't good enough in enough departments today and that is why we have been in there (the dressing room) so long."
