Winning vote could be worth up to £300m for the city of Sheffield

THE city of Sheffield stands to make between £160m and £300m during the 2018 World Cup, should England be chosen as hosts in Zurich today.

Nationally, the England bid team forecast an income of 3bn and for a host city like Sheffield, the economic impact and legacy spans today's vote until beyond the staging of the event.

Games will be played at Hillsborough, which hosted group matches in the 1966 World Cup and 1996 European Championships, but the whole city will be involved in putting on a show for the world's football fans.

Hillsborough Park will be used for media and corporate facilities, a fan park will be situated towards the city centre and Sheffield United's Bramall Lane – which at the outset of the city's bid was vying with Hillsborough to be a host stadium – will be used for training matches.

"There's no World Cup without a nation's cities, and this is an event that encapsulates the whole of Sheffield," said Sheffield bid director Wayne Coyle, who will join those involved in promoting the city's proposal in the Winter Gardens for today's vote.

"As well as the income it would generate, Sheffield would also have eight years as a World Cup host city, which has a lot of currency as well.

"The World Cup has a great legacy and it's about how you take advantage of that. We have already begun to put in place a football alliance between a number of parties which will continue even if we are not successful today. But we are positive, we have been positive throughout the process. Sheffield and Leeds have played a huge role and it is a very strong technical bid.

"The bidding cities have been very unified," he said. "Initially we were bidding against each other, then after December 16 we've all worked together."
