Wolves v Barnsley: Reds lifted by Wembley display

A trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers represents one of the toughest away assignments in this season’s second tier but Davies believes the battling display in losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night can help instil the belief needed to spring an upset. “There are some quality players here,” said the 25-year-old German-born goalkeeper when taking a break from preparations for the trip to Molineux that will bring up a notable century, a run that stretches back to November, 2015.

“Anyone at Wembley could see that. The lads said in the dressing room afterwards: ‘Let’s build on this and take it into our next few games’. We can hold our own against the best.”

Davies moved to Oakwell in the summer of 2014 after a two-year spell at Sheffield Wednesday that failed to yield a first-team appearance.

A senior debut followed on the opening day of the season but he was in and out of the side during those first 12 months.

Now, though, his iron-like grip on the goalkeeper’s shirt at Oakwell is not only illustrated by those 99 consecutive appearances but also the fact he was the only member of the starting XI against Spurs who had also appeared in that never-to-be-forgotten double-header at Wembley during the Spring of 2016.

Oxford United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and Millwall in the League One play-off final were both beaten by Barnsley under the Arch and the 25-year-old admits Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third round tie brought back some happy memories.

“It was nice to go back,” he added. “I had been to Wembley twice before and it felt quite comfortable. I knew what to expect.”

Davies had a quiet first half at Wembley despite Spurs dominating possession, the home side’s two chances coming via a couple of corners and even then Fernando Llorente and Juan Foyth headed wide.

His night became busier after the break but, overall, Barnsley could be pleased with their efforts against a starting XI that cost north of £100m in transfer fees.

Davies continued: “We defended fantastically well and had a couple of chances ourselves, which is the frustrating bit because we could have scored. If we had put one of them away, it could have been a different game.

“Holding our own against one of the best teams in the Premier League has to give us confidence to take into the weekend.

“You have to take the positives from that. Wolves will be a tough game but that gives us all a lift to take into the league. We need to get a run going, we all know that. We need to kick on and get some points on the board.”
