York 4 Wimbledon 1: Minstermen bounce back against leaders

YORK CITY put behind them the memory of Saturday’s calamitous 4-0 defeat by lowly Southport by crushing league leaders AFC Wimbledon who were last beaten on November 13.

The club dedicated their victory to former player Norman Wilkinson, their record goalscorer who died on Saturday and in whose memory a minute’s silence was observed before the kick-off.

York brought in Scott Kerr, their 29-year-old midfield signing from Lincoln on deadline day, and the home side quickly settled with a fine move between Peter Till, Jonathan Smith and Levi Mackin ending with Till shooting wide.

Michael Rankine was only inches wide after beating his marker and it was no surprise when York went ahead after 16 minutes, when Ashley Chambers flighted over a free-kick for Danny Parslow to score with a glancing header.

York went further ahead on the stroke of half-time when James Meredith ran clear before beating the advancing Seb Brown.

Wimbledon narrowed the gap with their first shot at goal in the 53rd minute when Chris Jolley scored with a fierce rising shot.

But York regained their two-goal lead seven minutes later when Chambers and Liam Darville combined for Rankine to score with a superb 25-yard shot into the top corner. Chambers then crashed in another 25-yarder with six minutes to go.
