York City 0 Boston United 1: Road to Wembley ends at the first hurdle for disappointed Mills

YORK CITY had a rare off-day as they crashed out in the first round of the Carlsberg FA Trophy at the hands of Boston United.

Manager Gary Mills made no attempt to hide his disappointment later. "We just didn't play and didn't deserve to go through. Our level of performance compared with recent games certainly dropped. This is a great competition which finishes at Wembley so I am very disappointed that so many of our players were below par on the day."

While York were the better side, they lacked attacking ideas against one of the meanest defences in England which boasts 13 clean sheets in 16 Blue Square North games and has conceded just nine goals all season.

York had plenty of possession but they moved the ball too slowly and often went across the pitch or backwards as Boston simply sat back and soaked up any pressure, making no attempt to score.

The only goal predictably came from a mistake, Robbie Weir slicing his intended 30th-minute clearance to present Spencer Weir-Daley with an easy opportunity to end York's run of five successive games without conceding a goal.

The Minstermen badly need a consistent goal scorer, leading marksman Michael Rankine being too easily bottled up by York-born Shaun Pearson.

York City: Ingham; Parslow, McGurk, Smith (Sangare 27), Meredith; Racchi (Till 46), Boucoud, Weir; McDermott (Constantine 65), Rankine, Chambers. Unused substitutes: Barrett, Fyfield.

Armthorpe Welfare overcame fourth-placed Brighouse Town

3-2 in the Northern Counties East League.

Former Doncaster striker Leo Fortune-West put Welfare in front in the 10th minute and it took the visitors until the hour mark before Nathan Cartman equalised. Welfare scored through Craig Wilkinson and Craig Morley before Cartman scored late on.
