York City 2 Luton Town 3: Bradley Fewster's double unable to spare Minstermen

Olly Lee’s stoppage-time solo effort secured victory for the Hatters against a Minstermen team who have been their nemesis for so long, including two painful play-off defeats during the clubs’ controversial Conference battles.

On-loan Middlesbrough striker Bradley Fewster had equalised twice for the hosts to cancel out second-half efforts from Cameron McGeehan and Jack Marriott but Lee’s late strike means Jackie McNamara’s men are two points adrift of third-bottom Hartlepool, having played three games more.

Luton scored from all three of their on-target attempts and York have now mustered just one clean sheet in 27 league contests. McNamara said: “It’s so frustrating, demoralising and disappointing because all the goals were preventable.”

An unmarked McGeehan headed in on 52 minutes only for Fewster to level when he anticipated Stephen O’Donnell’s stray pass and rounded Mark Tyler before scoring.

Marriott back-heeled Luton ahead again from O’Donnell’s cross and after Fewster shot past Tyler from 10 yards on 82 minutes following Kenny McEvoy’s header, it looked like York would earn at least a draw.

But Lee brushed past ineffective challenges by McEvoy, Russell Penn and Will Boyle before firing in.
