York City 2 Notts Co 1: Minstermen have chance to move away from trouble

YORK City have climbed off the bottom of the Football League for the first time since January 2.

The Minstermen, enjoying their first back-to-back home wins of the campaign, will move out of the relegation zone tomorrow night if they can win their game in hand against Exeter at Bootham Crescent.

Michael Coulson and Bradley Fewster struck in the first half to give York a strong advantage going into the break.

But the hosts extended their long run without a clean sheet to a 23rd league game when on-loan Newcastle defender Lubo Satka headed through his own goal just past the hour mark.

York manager Jackie McNamara, without injured forward Vadaine Oliver, was pleased with how his side coped with a towering County side, who forced an incredible 18 corners,

He said: “We had to withstand a lot of high ball into our box, but we dealt with that well apart from a couple of occasions and that was pleasing because their height advantage was a concern for me before the game.”

After Jon Stead had hit the bar during a promising start for the visitors, Coulson scored on 24 minutes in stylish fashion, latching on to Kyle Cameron’s clearance to beat a back-pedalling Roy Carroll with his perfectly-measured 15-yard lob.

Fewster pounced to apply the finishing touch to a brilliant team move.

Slovakian Under-21 international Satka’s misplaced header went on to sail over Scott Flinders, but York held out
