York City set to invest play-off bounty

YORK CITY officials say their play-off final heartache will not halt the progression the club is making.

The Minstermen netted 200,000 from their three-match play-off adventure, of which a healthy percentage will go towards helping manager Martin Foyle build a team capable of another crack at promotion next season.

The rest will be used for funding the club's day-to-day workings as the reality of missing out on promotion to the Football League, and a windfall of 750,000, hits home.

Can York City bounce back? Richard Sutcliffe gives his verdict in this week's SportsTalk >>

Club director Sophie Hicks said: "The big positive from the whole experience is the money we've made and we are confident about the future.

"A large core of the team will be staying and Martin Foyle is already in discussions with players about committing to York for next season.

"The board showed this season that we are willing to support Martin and that will be our position next season.

"We want to support him and try and get promoted next season.

"Nearly all of the players when they collected their medals on Sunday said 'we'll do it next year', and that's very much the belief in the whole camp."

The club are also confident they can convince York Council to build a 6,000-seater community stadium for the city.

Proposals for various sites will be put to the council in July and Hicks added: "As Martin puts a team together this summer, the focus of the board will be on driving the community stadium forward and showing York Council that the city needs and deserves a modern stadium."
