York City v Newport County: Matt Dixon's arrival will offset loss of Ben Godfrey

The 21-year-old has moved to Bootham Crescent on an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee and fills a vacancy in the squad after the departure of Ben Godfrey, who moved to Norwich City yesterday.

Dixon captained the Tigers’ Under-21 side after a loan spell with Gainsborough Trinity last season.

Hull manager Steve Bruce believes he has sold the Minstermen a “very, very good footballer” and admitted Dixon was unfortunate not to find a place in his first team.

He said: “We wish Matty the best of luck because he’s been here since he was a very young lad. He’s been a really great lad to have around.

“York will be getting a very, very good footballer. He’s a good passer of the ball, he sees things and he’s very good at what he does.

“I wish him the best of luck because I hope he goes on to have a really good career and prove us wrong.

“There was times in pre-season when he’d done that well that he nearly started the season for us, but with Isaac Hayden walking in through the door and Jake Livermore coming back, he’s found his route blocked.

“It’s good for him that he’s found a home with York.”

York chief Jackie McNamara admitted it would have been difficult to keep Godfrey from joining Norwich.

“While we wanted to keep Ben long-term and offered him a two-year contract that proved difficult once there was interest and Norwich came in for him,” he said.

“Ben’s mind was made up, however, and I, like everyone at the club, wish him all the best in the next step of his career.”
