Accrington 0 York 1: Late Walker strike is enough for York win

JASON Walker’s fourth goal of the season earned York City a hard-fought win at Accrington Stanley.

The former Luton striker pounced in the 83rd minute to earn the Minstemen a deserved three points at the Crown Ground.

Earlier, York had the better chances in a goalless first half with busy home goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin denying Clarke Carlisle, Matty Blair and Walker.

Carlisle’s scrambled, close-range effort from a Danny Kearns corner was grabbed in a crowded six-yard box by Dunbavin just before the half-hour mark.

The Stanley goalkeeper then reacted smartly to keep out Blair’s deflected 20-yard drive and also got his hand to a Walker drive before team-mate Dean Winnard kicked a goal-bound spinning ball off the line.

At the other end, lone striker Padraig Amond missed his team’s best chance when he headed off target from an accurate Luke Joyce cross.

Just past the hour mark, George Miller fired wide from 25 yards for Accrington, but York midfielder Kearns should have done better moments later when he dragged a good chance wide following Carlisle’s lay off.

Walker, though, broke the deadlock when he pounced on a loose ball in the penalty box and deftly lifted his eight-yard shot over Dunbavin.

The visitors might have even doubled their margin before the final whistle but man-of-the-match Dunbavin saved well with his feet to deny the lively Chambers.
