Michael Coulson’s second goal in as many games saw the Minstermen move to within four points of a top-seven place.

The Minstermen have won seven matches since the turn of the year and now have 11 games to collect the five points that Worthington believes will preserve the club’s Football League status.

And, for now, he is looking no further than attaining that goal.

He said: “There’s nothing to get excited about but, if we keep focussed and have belief, we will be OK. The 51 points is the target.”

Despite Danny Hylton missing the target with two good chances for the hosts, York were the better side for long periods at Kingsmeadow and should have won by a greater margin.

Coulson opened the scoring on 41 minutes when he headed in from an excellent Lanre Oyebanjo right-wing cross.

The ex-Scarborough and Barnsley attacker went on to make a hash of a second-half chance to double the advantage and Josh Carson also went close but Ryan Bowman squandered the greatest opportunity for a second goal with an unbelievable 67th-minute miss.

Presented with an open goal from Coulson’s square ball after a mistake by home keeper Ross Worner, Bowman somehow contrived to shoot wide from six yards. Fortunately, for a relieved Bowman, his profligacy counted for little.
